I wanted to delve more into studying how to paint digitally, so I came across this video which was about creating a master study. A master study is about breaking down an image and learning more about the techniques of another artist.

With my master study I used this image from an artist called Michael Malm. I really love the painterly look of his oil paints and wanted to try and replicate that in my own painting. I also love the values that he uses to create the subject. I broke the form down into shapes and simplified versions to try and understand how the artist creates his work. I spent over an hour studying the piece and I found this part of the process quite fun and I learned a lot more by doing this than just straight up copying from the image.

I then created a version of the image in black and white, as black and white is easier than painting in colour to pick up values. I like how this turned out, I got out of it what I was trying to learn, I gave myself an hour time limit to paint this and that helped drive me to paint faster and even though I went over the time limit, it showed me I can work quickly. There were just a few things I would change if I was to do this piece again. I would make some of the darker values even darker as there is not as much contrast in those areas and also some of the proportions are a bit off, her head and body are a bit wider than in the original but I quite like my own take on it. I create a timelapse video of my process to show how I made the piece.
