We had a talk today from two professionals in the film industry, Kirsten and Matt. They bought out important things for us to think about and even though I don't want to progress in the film industry they still talked about important skills that flow through all creative practices.

They are both freelancers and talked about how there are good and bad things that come with freelancing and filming in general. They said that being in the industry is tough but that we shouldn't sell ourselves short just because we are students, but that we need to portray confidence with people that we interact with and other professionals.

Don't be so caught up on trying to make everything go smoothly, you will learn more from making mistakes than doing everything right first time. They said that employers love people who are problem solvers, so if you do make a mistake and correct it, they are much more likely to remember you or keep you on than some who doesn't know how to solve problems.

CV's need to be specific for each different job that you apply for. Keep them short as employers won't spend that much time reading through them, mention the key points on the top of the page. Skills in Excel/Word are really important and employers are more likely to hire you if you know these technical skills.

Don't let people take advantage of you, there should be mutual respect, always show that you can be assertive, but don't go to the extreme where you become arrogant. If you send a piece of work to a client and they ask you to change it, then change it for them as they are the one's paying for the service.

Relationships are important. Communicate with different people as you can gain various contacts and opportunities by doing this. Matt was able to do a music video with Liam Payne because he kept in contact with Liam Payne's videographer. When he worked with Liam Payne, Matt treated him like any other customer.

It doesn't matter who you are working for, always keep in your mind to do better than yesterday.
