Eleanor Snare gave us a great talk about where do we see ourselves in the future and personal traits about the things we value and what things do we look for in a career. She asked us questions such as:

Where do you want to get to in your career?

Be happy in a creative career/ Help people with my art/ May open my own bakery/art cafe one day

What do other people seek in their careers? Become a CEO of a company/ Build their way up and improve skills/ Money/ Recognition of hard work/ Free time/ Making a difference

And why?

Sense of authority and respect

Feel like they are progressing

To have financial stability or indulge in luxuries

To feel proud of their work and acknowledged by other people, to not feel ignored

To show self worth, that they can make a difference to others

Nonviolent communication: The basics of Nonviolent Communication involve expressing ourselves with clarity, compassion, self-responsibility, empathy, and the common good in mind, which is the exact opposite of what violent communication is.

The pursuit of money for some people is about survival, they want to be secure, when they get more money, they focus more on luxuries.

Interest, excitement, mastering, influence, power were all other traits that people pursue when finding a career path.

What do I value?

Think about your values and what is important to you? How do you know what your values are?

Eleanor set us a task where she would put up a slide for 30 seconds and it will be full of words, and we each have to write down the first words that stand out to us without thinking. The first word I got was:

Power

For me this surprised me at first but then the more I thought about it, the more I thought this was a great word to describe my situation. I've always struggled to say no to people and don't always show my authority to the standard I want to, so my aim is to start show more sense of power in my day to day life. To make those changes I will:

  • Apply for governor

  • Take charge of more situations

  • Go to training about presentations and public speaking

  • Start saying NO to more people

She then left us with some things that we should be thinking about on a regular basis or put into practice in our lives:

  1. Work really hard at understanding who you are

  2. Align what you think, what you say and what you do

  3. When you make a plan, start from the goal and work backwards

  4. Get a roof over your head and food on the table. Everything else is a bonus.

  5. Have faith in who you are and who you will become.
