For this short brief, the task was to create a cute character for a competition. I actually went to the session not really knowing what it was about, but wanted to learn more about creating characters. Drawing cute characters is something that I don't really do, it was quite out of my comfort zone and at the start thought it was okay, but after a few drawings, I started to find it very difficult to come up with concepts. As I go along my ideas start to get worse. But then Ian came along and gave some advice to not be so literal with my work try and think outside the box. One thing I struggle with is being conceptual but started to draw formless shapes and then I would draw what I see from the shape and this helped me a lot to be less literal with what I'm making. I then started to think about creating a story between two characters and I was able to come up with my concept in the end.
This was a really helpful session for me, it made me realise I need to explore different types of art to expand my mind and not to worry about making my art always look pristine and linear. I definitely want to explore little challenges like this to build up my knowledge and help me experiment with different mediums.
