Gal-Dem is a magazine publication that talks about issues facing women of colour and life from their perspective. Their aim is to address inequality and misrepresentation in the industry through platforming their work across fashion, lifestyle, politics, music, arts and opinion.

Their main values include, community, accessibility, curiosity, justice, kindness, integrity, transparency, empathy. I think it's really powerful that they have core values that they stick to and made me think about what my core values are/ should be, I am taking the time to really think about my work and what message I want to get across? What are the ethics and motives of my thought process? It really resonated with me.

Gal-dem are a highly visual platform, and are known for their bold, scrapbook illustration style. They have a big pool of illustrators who they commission out to. When they first plan a piece, they think about what style of illustration would go best with it. They then give a general brief to the illustrator, who brings back some preliminary sketches. They’ll discuss these sketches, then they go away to work on the final image. All illustrators are paid – and are often also given opportunities to do brand work, get involved in exhibitions etc.

What I like about Gal-Dem is the fact that they are a bit controversial, they talk about issues and create art/articles that are based around race. As a black male it resonated with me to explore this notion of race in the creative industry, especially black men and how they are represented.
